Lewis’s Inspiration: "I didn’t want my book to be an ordinary book. Be Kind is a book of ideas that come from my everyday life of being an aunt, 2nd grade teacher, and mental health professional. I used my sibling’s children, family friends, and my students to inspire me to write this book and to create the curriculum at the back of the book. My nieces and nephews were often used as my focus group. The target reading audience for my book are ages 5-9 years old. The characters in my book are animals with humanistic qualities. Alaya is really my niece and Zoey is really her childhood friend. At the end of Be Kind, I created a series of curriculum to improve children’s social and literary skills, which include comprehension, fluency, and many other skills."
Lewis grew up in Midwest City, Oklahoma. She graduated from Midwest City High School in 2001. As a proud second generation graduate of Langston University, she earned a Master of Rehabilitation Counseling and a Master in Elementary Education. She is married to Dr. Phillip D. Lewis. They have two children together. She is a member of the Faith Memorial Baptist Church, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Chapter Historian), and the Rhonda K. Hutson Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation (Vice President). Lewis is also an educator and mental health professional.
